Reading Group
Monday, May 13, 3pm, Room 830 : Reading Group “Energy, Extractivism, Empire.”
Each of the participants is invited to come with an object (book, essay, extract, photograph, musical piece, material object…) related to “energy, extractivism, empire.” The period is open and the geographical provenance need not be limited to the anglophone worlds. Each of the participants will have between 10 and 15 minutes to introduce the object. Please feel free to send Thomas Dutoit and Cécile Roudeau a heads-up in advance. Our wish is to share our recent encounters with objects that offer a singular perspective on the topic. Our broader concern is with the field of energy humanities, its relevance or irrelevance, its purchase or elusiveness for finding our bearings either as humans in the Anthropocene or as professionals in the humanities-to-come (if any). This reading group will be preceded by a one-hour discussion with the doctoral students and Jesse Oak Taylor on the field of “environmental humanities.”
